Android 5.0 Lollipop has been released for some time now, but as we all know releasing the source code to the AOSP and updating Nexus devices doesn’t mean much. At least not to users that have purchased their phones on contract from manufacturers like Samsung, Sony, LG and HTC. Often times, owners of such devices are sadly left playing catch-up while they wait for their update to the latest version of Google’s OS. LG have been surprisingly quick this year with their update to Android 5.0 Lollipop, their 2014 flagship, the G3, has been updated in South Korea and throughout Europe. LG have beaten Samsung, HTC and Sony to the punch, and it looks like the G2 from last year is next in line.
A leaked screenshot has appeared showing Android 5.0.1, with a build number of LRX21Y running on a G2. Sadly, this G2 is the F320L, the LTE-Advanced version released for just South Korea. No matter though, as this is how LG and Samsung often do things; they’ll release the update in their home market before rolling it out elsewhere. As such, seeing it running on a South Korean G2 is a good sign, and shows that LG is working on it. How far away we are from a global rollout is anybody’s guess, but I doubt we’ll see anything until early next year. For a device released in the Summer of 2013 though, that’s not too bad a timeframe, and there’s also talk of the new interface from the G3 making its way down to its older brother.
The screenshot in question really isn’t much to go on, as it’s just a peak at the about phone screen, but it does look like the device is going straight to Android 5.0.1. As for the G3 UI making its way into the update, I can see that happening. This year LG has released a number of budget-minded handsets and each of them has had the UI from the G3, including features like Knock Code. As such, I don’t see why LG wouldn’t bring the new user interface to the G2, but we’ll have to wait and see.
