Samsung SM-A500 Due to Launch with a 5-inch 720p AMOLED Display and Snapdragon 400

AH Samsung

We had heard that Samsung was going to be launching more devices in it’s “Galaxy Alpha” line of devices. Which are mid-range phones with a metal frame. The Galaxy Alpha basically has the same specs as the Galaxy S3 from 2012, but it has a metal frame. Now there’s the SM-A500, which Sammobile seems to have all the specs for this one. They also say that this will be a full metal body, and will not have a removable back cover. So you can wave good bye to removable batteries with this one. This would also mean it’ll feel more premium than even the Galaxy Alpha.

As far as specs go, we’re hearing a 5-inch 1280×720 resolution AMOLED display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor clocked at 1.4GHz, 8MP camera on the back, 5MP camera on the front, 16GB of storage and a microSD card slot, and a 2330mAh battery. Is it just me, or does that battery seem kinda large for a 5-inch mid-range device? Not that it’s a bad thing. Hopefully it translates into some decent battery life though. Sammobile is also saying there won’t be a heart rate monitor, no fingerprint sensor and it won’t be water proof or dust proof, which is unfortunate. But not all that surprising as this is a mid-ranger from Samsung.

No word on when exactly, this SM-A500 will be launching, but we’d venture to guess later this year, or perhaps at the Consumer Electronics Show in January from Las Vegas. But it is great to see that Samsung is putting quality hardware into their mid-range offerings. For much too long, their mid-range and even low-end smartphones weren’t all that attractive. Although they were not alone here. Pretty much since Motorola put out the Moto G last year, we’ve seen companies beginning to step up their mid-range and low-end smartphones. Even LG has put some decent offerings out lately.
