Google I/O came and went without news on Voice or Hangouts, but that doesn’t mean Google isn’t working in the background to integrate its remaining messaging services.
We’ve already knew that some sort of integration is in the pipeline, but now we have the clearest proof yet in the form of an unfinished feature that can be accessed via a debug menu in the Hangouts app.
As discovered by Kenji Castro, the “Activate All Butter Bars” option in the normally hidden debug menu in Hangouts shows a “Migrate Google Voice to Hangouts” dialog, with the description “Receive voicemail and send text messages in Hangouts”. Before you get too excited, tapping on the “Turn it on” button doesn’t actually do anything for the moment, as the required backend doesn’t appear to be functional. The debug menu in Hangouts can be activated using this tool developed by XDA user r3pwn.
So there you have it – further proof that Voice will be eventually folded into Hangouts. Now, how about a little patience?
