The Shield handheld console launched about a year ago, and it looks that Nvidia may release a new Shield device soon – however, the new Shield may be a tablet, not a console, if recent information is accurate.
We’ve known for a while that Nvidia has a Shield-branded tablet in its labs, but now the device surfaced in the database of a certification body, suggesting that we’re getting close to a release. The Global Certification Forum, a group that tests devices for mobile network interoperability, put up an entry for a Shield Tablet made by Nvidia supporting 3G and LTE. In a subsequent tweet, the same group revealed that the Nvidia device it just certified is a “notebook/tablet” pointing to the possibility that the Shield Tablet is actually a convertible, similar to Asus’ Transformer devices.

Granted on June 26, the GCF certification may be an indication that Nvidia is gearing up to launch the Shield Tablet in the close future. From earlier leaks, including this benchmark listing, we believe the Shield Tablet will feature Nvidia’s powerhouse Tegra K1 chip, a 2048 x 1536 screen, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, and a 7MP rear camera.
One a side note, the only other Tegra K1-powered device out there is the Xiaomi Mi Pad, while rumors suggest the HTC-made Nexus 9 (Volantis) may use the same SoC.
Just because Nvidia is launching a gaming tablet, it doesn’t mean it plans to ditch the Shield console. Benchmark listings point to a revamped version featuring the same Tegra K1 chip and 4GB of RAM, with a slightly improved display of 1440 x 810 pixels resolution.
With the one-year anniversary of the availability of Shield around the corner, it seems safe to expect an announcement from Nvidia this summer. Anyone excited?
