Samsung Gave Away A Free Galaxy S6 To SK Telecom Consumers Who Still Own The First Galaxy S Device

AH Samsung Galaxy S6_37

Samsung has announced the company’s newest flagships on March 1st as part of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. This Korea-based smartphone OEM has for the first time announced two flagship devices which are similar, and yet different. The Galaxy S6 is the regularly-shaped smartphone, and it sports a unibody metal design, which is also a first for Samsung. The Galaxy S6 Edge is kind of an oddball here, this handset features curved screen on both its left and right side, which makes it odd and yet unique. Many people think that the S6 Edge is the better looking of the two. These two devices sport the same internals though, aside from a slightly bigger battery in the Galaxy S6 Edge.

That being said, Samsung has decided to reward a part of SK Telecom’s userbase in Korea. This Korea-based company has given a free Galaxy S6 handset to every SK Telecom user who is still carrying the first Galaxy S device which launched back in 2010. They also got a year’s worth of free calls on SK Telecom as part of the reward. Believe it or not, 17,000 SK Telecom subscribers are still rockin’ the Galaxy S handset (using it, or keeping it around the house). Additional statistics say that approximately 1,600 SK Telecom users have every single one of the 13 different Galaxy S series devices in Korea, and 2,400 users purchased more than 10 of them replacing their phones twice a year.

Anyhow, let’s take a quick look at Galaxy S6’s specifications. This handset ships sporting a 5.1-inch QuadHD (2560 x 1440) Super AMOLED display along with 3GB of LPDDR4 RAM and 32, 64 or 128GB of internal storage. Samsung’s 64-bit octa-core Exynos 7420 processor is powering on this handset, and you’ll find a 2,550mAh battery built-in here. 16-megapixel OIS camera is located on the back of this handset, and a 5-megapixel snapper is available up front. Android 5.0.2 Lollipop comes pre-installed here with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI on top of it. Speaking of software, Samsung has cleaned up its software offering this time around, at least to some extent.

There’s no point in comparing the Galaxy S and Galaxy S6. There are 5 years of technology between the two devices, the Galaxy S shipped with a single-core SoC and 512MB of RAM. The two devices do have some things in common though, they still look somewhat similar in general shape, the physical home button is still here, and the display size is almost identical.
