We’ve news today that unlocked Samsung Galaxy S5 and LG G3 handsets in the UK market are at long last receiving their over the air updates to Android 5.0 Lollipop. Some users have already reported that their S5 or G3 have received the update, but these may have been sporadic updates. If you’ve been impatiently waiting for the over the air on your device, you shouldn’t have long to wait.
Android 5.0 Lollipop brings about itself a number of improvements to both the S5 and G3 devices, but most of these are under the skin. There are a huge number of changes to the platform including a change to how applications are compiled and managed on the device. Google have moved Android from the Dalvik RunTime, which compiles application when they are launched, to the Android RunTime, which compiles the applications when they are installed onto the device. Day to day, this means that applications should launch that little bit quicker on the device but it usually means that it takes longer for applications to install. In some cases, it means that it might take many seconds to install a new application or update to the device, whereas before it might only take a handful of seconds.
Another important change under the skin is how Android now has a network scheduler built into the operating system. The network scheduler is designed to defer network activity until a better time dictated by a combination of core Android applications and other third party applications. By better, this means that the operating system will combine network activity, which is kinder the battery. Applications must be aware of the network scheduling functionality, which means they’ll need an update from their developers (if not already). It means that an application will request network activity within a window, for example, between the next four to fourteen minutes. The operating system collates all requests to optimize the best time to connect.
