Last week, it was rumored that Microsoft was investing in Cyanogen Inc., now it looks like they will be investing in Sunrise Calendar. For those that aren’t aware of Sunrise Calendar, it’s a very popular and nice looking calendar app for both Android and iOS. TechCrunch is currently reporting that Microsoft is paying around $100 million for the app maker. Sunrise has become known for their simple, yet elegant app design, and it looks like Microsoft took notice. But what will they do with them? Perhaps integrate them with their other apps? Leave them as is and let Sunrise continue to function as it does right now?
Currently the deal isn’t official. We haven’t heard anything from Sunrise or Microsoft, so it’s still all rumor. But what if they have bought Sunrise? What does this mean for Sunrise and for Microsoft? Well it could mean that Outlook is about to get a much prettier calendar. Or maybe, Microsoft is just going to buy apps to get them on Windows Phone, or whatever they are calling that platform these days. But the fact that Microsoft is rumored to be investing in both Sunrise and Cyanogen do tell us that they are heavily investing in the mobile industry. Which is good for those that use their smartphones from Nokia, or HTC. I think Samsung gave up on Windows for now.
We’ll have to await confirmation from Microsoft and Sunrise on this one, but for now it looks like it’s a done deal. $100 million for a calendar app. Wish I owned Sunrise, what about the rest of you?Although, Microsoft did spend about $200 million on Acompli, not too long ago. What does everyone think Microsoft is up to with these purchases or investments? Be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
