Huawei Working On New China Mobile G628 With Eight 64-bit Cores and LTE

Huawei are working on a new 64-bit, octa core mid-range device, the G628. This new device is noteworthy for a few reasons, but first let me detail the core specification: the G628 is based around a 5.0-inch, 720p resolution touchscreen, that octa core 1.5 GHz MediaTek MT6752 processor, 1GB of RAM with 8GB of internal storage. Around the back, users will find a 8MP rear camera and there’s a front-mounted 2MP unit for selfies, too. The G628 also includes 4G LTE networking technology and it’s a dual-SIM device. And the G628 will run Huawei’s Emotion 2.3 user interface over Android 4.4 KitKat. Although the G628 doesn’t run the very latest version of Emotion UI, Huawei have given the device a couple of new features including a child mode and an ultra power saving mode.

So far, so good: these specifications point towards a fairly typical mid-range device. However, let’s dig a little deeper: the MT6752 processor has a maximum clock speed of 1.5 GHz for each of its eight ARM Cortex-A53 cores and it is also compatible with 4G LTE networks. These are the newer generation, 64-bit cores that are designed to replace the ARM Cortex-A7. Depending on how you benchmark these cores (and this is one reason why I’m not the biggest fan of benchmarks) they’re reputed to be around 25% quicker, core for core, than the older processor. Day to day they should use less power, too and of course, they can run 64-bit code. And it’s here when we run into the first speed bump of the G628: Android 4.4 KitKat does not support 64-bit code. It’s 32-bit only. This won’t bother the processor as the ARM Cortex-A53 is compatible with both 32-bit and 64-bit code, but it does make any marketing material proclaiming greatness from the 64-bit core as meaningless fluff. Still, for the purposes of running KitKat, those benchmarks I reported on earlier are for 32-bit code so the new generation processor is still a leg up on the old one. However, in that ideal world we’ll need Huawei to update the G628 to Android 5.0 Lollipop in order to see the full benefit of the new processor.

To wrap up the Huawei G628, it’s going to be priced at around 1,000 Yuan, somewhere around the £105 or $160 point. The first version appears destined for China Mobile as it supports the TD-LTE and TD-SCDMA networks, but it’s possible that Huawei will release the handset in the developed markets around the world as the Ascend G628 and with international LTE networks and maybe, just maybe, Android 5.0 Lollipop.
