Asus’ “Face The Future” Competition Could Score You A ZenWatch

ASUS ZenWatch-02

It’s difficult for manufacturers to differentiate their own particular Android Wear smartwatch from the competition because Google have locked down the software. Some manufacturers have added new sensors and radios, such as Sony including WiFi on their Smartwatch 3, only Android Lollipop for the Wear devices doesn’t (yet) support. Most Wear devices use the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, although Motorola decided to use an alternative. The other way is by design, either the body of the watch, the strap or both. And we’ve seen a few variants of common themes: round watch faces and squared off ones. Stainless steel straps, leather ones or rubber bands. Then we have how to recharge the Android Wear device, either using a docks, cradles or port. The other way to differentiate the device is by costs, so we’ve seen expensive Android Wear and slightly less or more expensive Android Wear devices!

Asus entry into the list is an elegant design, made of stainless steel with a curved glass. Inside, you’ll find the atypical Snapdragon 400 processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of local storage and a 1.6-inch AMOLED screen of 320 by 320 pixel resolution. The device also includes a heart rate sensor and a 360mAh battery, but let me go back to the watch design: this is one of the few squared-off Android Wear watches that I like enough to consider buying. It has smooth lines and isn’t too large, either.

The watch already comes with a hundred watch faces but what if you want a different design? Well, now’s your chance to do one better and win yourself a ZenWatch, too! Asus have three watches up for grabs both for the designers and those people who interact, so; the voters. There are six categories to the competition: Overall Gold Medal, Best Beauty in Design, Best Practical Design, Best Creative Design, Best Student Design Award, and Fan Favorite. The first five categories are going to be determined by Asus whereas the last will be put to the vote. The competition runs from the 10 January to the 10 February, when voting will commence to conclude on the 28 February. It’s open to anybody over the world (but the Asus source website highlights that there may be certain country restrictions): so if you are up for some design work, go ahead and enter!
