Google to bring Project Loon to parts of Australia in December

project_loon_screenshot It’s no secret that Google wants to bring the Internet to everyone in the world. More people using its services means better targeted ads which means more money in Google’s pockets. About a year and a half ago Google showcased the idea of Project Loon. The premise of the project would be the use of balloons to bring Internet to remote and rural areas around the world. Google first tested the project in New Zealand it looks like the search giant will be adding New Zealand’s neighbor, Australia to the project.

Google will test-fly 20 balloons starting in December in western Queensland. The company is said to be partnering with Telstra for the project. Telstra will be supplying base stations to communication with the balloons while also allowing access to space in their radio spectrum.

It’s certainly a good sign for Google in that it’s adding more areas to the project. If Loon proves to be a success remote areas and areas where natural disasters have occurred will benefit from Google’s Internet carrying helium balloons.
