Xiaomi Attacks The Mobile Gaming Peripheral Market With Upcoming Gamepad

In a not so weird or surprising move, Xiaomi is all set to launch a Bluetooth gamepad, reportedly this week, for use with its MiPad and MiTV products. If you think about it, the gamepad actually makes perfect sense, as mobile smartphone and tablet gaming on Android has been on the rise for a while, Xiaomi phones and tablets run Android, and there are tons of other Bluetooth gamepads out on the market already, so it just seems like a smart move for Xiaomi to a gamepad of their own as an option to consumers. With the compatibility of the gamepad for use with the MiTV’s, it’s possible that Xiaomi is planning for this gamepad to work with the upcoming OUYA games that are planned to be running on MiTV’s thanks to the partnership that was announced by both companies.

Right now there isn’t any official word on what the cost of this new Bluetooth gamepad will be, but most Xiaomi devices and products are priced on the low end of the cost scale so chances are that this won’t end up putting anyone out that much. Reports state that the first handful of buyers(the first 300 people to purchase)of the gamepad will even get it at a significant discount equal to about $0.16. At that price, even if the controller was only mediocre it would be still be a great deal just to have an extra controller.

The controller is already being compared to the Xbox 360 and Xbox One controllers as well as the Playstation controller, which is understandable given its design. The shape and button placement all evoke an Xbox controller sense of style right down to the “Mi” button in the middle where the Xbox home button sits on its respective gamepads. Since a selection of games from OUYA’s lineup will be offered on the MiTV’s later this year(which could be sooner than we think)we’d expect that the OUYA controller will work to be compatible with them, but on the off chance that isn’t the case this could be how Xiaomi had planned to attack the issue of controlling those games once the lineup emerges, and having the gamepad come with compatibility for their other devices like the Mipad as well seems like a nice bonus.
