LG Wine Smart is a flip phone for the modern age

They were all the rage in early 2000’. And then smartphones pushed them aside, and the world forgot about them. But flip phones still have a following of sorts, even though the ones you still see today tend to be venerable old-timers.

Not the Wine Smart, LG’s new clamshell smartphone that launched today in Korea. The device packs a 3.5-inch 480 x 320 display, a quad-core CPU, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage (expandable), an 8MP camera, and a 1,700 mAh battery. The Wine Smart is LG’s first smartphone of this form factor, and comes as a throwback to the Wine series of “dumb” flip phones that LG put out between 2007 and 2012.

As reflected in the spec sheet, this isn’t a device that’s meant to impress tech lovers. LG actually hopes that the Wine Smart will impress senior citizens with a nostalgia for simpler days.

According to Yonhap News , a company official said LG is considering releasing the device overseas, without elaborating. For now, the Wine Smart will go on sale on September 26, in black and white options.

LG’s crosstown rival Samsung launched its own flip smartphone last year. The Galaxy Golden has slightly better specifications and two WVGA screens.
