In the world of productivity there are many tools that one can have at their disposal. There are also many tools that one can use to stream media content to the big screen for a more enjoyable experience, or perhaps just a bigger layout, if that’s the need or the want. What about a tool or device that can do both though, and all in the form a small portable package that you can carry with you in your pocket? That’s the basis for Dell’s new streaming dongle that allows users to take it with them anywhere they go, whether it be used for enterprise or business purposes or to stream movies or TV shows to your TV or monitor. The Dell cast dongle will plug into any HDMI port and can be kept running thanks to the USB power cord(just like the Chromecast)but it offers some functionality that the the Chromecast doesn’t have, at least not yet, that might make it the go-to for someone looking to pick up a device that has a mix of work and play capabilities.
As stated above the Dell Cast dongle will stream content like the Chromecast, this is usable in what is called “Entertainment Mode,” but the Dell Cast also offers a “Productivity Mode” which allows the optional connection of a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, and then further connection to a compatible Dell Android tablet with the companion app so that users can create a portable computer like experience on a large screen, but without having to use a laptop to get the job done. The dongle is fairly small, and Bluetooth keyboards, mice, and a tablet are all fairly small in size as well. Keeping multiple devices on you might seem more cumbersome than carrying around an entire laptop computer, but with the difference in size and weight this particular setup might be easier.
In contrast, both the Chromecast and the Dell Cast seem like they can provide an alternative solution to lugging a laptop around with you everywhere you go, but the question is whether or not the extra $45 dollars is worth it. The Dell Cast will set consumers back $79.99 and is limited to Dell Android tablet compatibility, so does the capability to hook up a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse justify the higher cost and the scarcity of device use?
