Earlier today we reported on an iFixit teardown for the Moto 360 which revealed that the battery inside is labeled as 300mAh, not the 320 that the company advertises. As you might expect, this caused quite a few negative reactions and complaints, with many asking for Motorola to respond with an explanation.
Motorola has now spoken up, defending its device and sticking behind the claim that it has a 320mAh battery. Here’s their official statement:
The typical battery capacity for Moto 360 is 320mAh and the minimum is 300mAh. In the mobile industry, sometimes both the minimum and typical capacity is listed on the battery, with the typical capacity quoted as the official battery size. Both figures are included on the batteries of our Moto X, Moto E and Moto G devices. In the case of smaller devices, we aren’t always able to list both figures. For Moto 360, we only had room for one figure and choose to list the minimal capacity of the battery. We see how this can be confusing and we will look into ways to add the typical capacity as well in the future.
Basically, what they are saying is that the battery capacity range is 300 to 320mAh but they decided to only list the minimum — probably thinking few will see the battery anyhow since the watch isn’t exactly easy to take apart. Of course there seems to be plenty of room for a 320 on the watch in our opinion, but ultimately the decision was Motorola’s to make.
