Sony announced their late 2014 flagship devices, the Z3 range, at the IFA show, Berlin, earlier this month and we now have a list of prices of the smartphones at several UK retailers. If you’re unfamiliar with Sony’s Xperia Z range, the Z3 is the latest iteration. There are two devices: the Z3 and the Z3 Compact. Both devices have similar internal specifications but the full size Z3 has a slight edge over the smaller Z3 Compact, which I’ll come on to. They’re based around the quad core 2.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor with 3 GB of RAM for the full size Z3 and 2 GB of RAM for the Compact. Both use the Adreno 330 GPU, which powers a 5.2-inch 1080p Triluminus display on the Z3 and a 4.6-inch, 720p Triluminus screen on the Z3 Compact. Both handsets use Sony’s proprietary X-Reality for mobile picture engine to enhance picture and video quality. Each uses a Sony Exmor RS 20.7 MP rear facing camera with a pulsed LED flash but have different batteries: the Z3 carries a 3,100 mAh battery and the Z3 Compact makes do with 2,600 mAh. Sony’s flagship devices have solid battery life and both are reputed to be able to keep going for a couple of days. And the price? Sony’s website has the full Z3 available for £549 ($900) and the Z3 Compact is quite a bit cheaper at £429 ($700).

If you’re willing to shop around, Clove has the Sony Xperia Z3 at £515 ($850), Amazon at £529 ($870) and Unlocked Mobiles at £499 ($820). However, because the Z3 isn’t yet available in the UK market so the carriers aren’t quoting prices just yet. There are also savings to be had with the Z3 Compact as Clove have it at £349 ($575) and Unlocked Mobiles at £399 ($650). As the Z3 Compact is brand new, only Carphone Warehouse and O2 are showing prices for it. You can buy it outright from O2 at £414 ($675) or if you use O2 Refresh, you’ll pay from £336 for the handset plus extra for airtime, meaning it’s free from £27 a month with 500 MB of 4G data. Carphone Warehouse are advertising the Z3 Compact free from £26.50 a month, slightly cheaper, but this is on a 3G tariff.

Who’s in the UK and waiting for the Z3 or Z3 Compact? We don’t have long to wait. Hit us up in the comments below or on our Google+ pages.
