Android TV Might Soon Land in France Thanks To Free

AH Google IO-1409 Android TV 2.1

Google’s annual I/O event this year was full of little nuggets of information. Most of the headlines recently have focused on Google’s new operating system, Android L (Android 5.0) and also Android Wear – the operating system underlining all android-based wearables such as smartwatches. However, there was also the other announcements which should not be so easily overlooked. One of my personal favourites was that of Android TV. As a big TV fan (and of course an Android fan) the thought of two of my favourite entities coming together is extremely exciting.

For those of you who might have missed the announcement or need a quick catch-up, Android TV is exactly what it sounds like. It will offer an android-based user experience directly on your TV. No more need to cast your smartphone’s screen or make do with the poor performance of most smart TV’s limited interface. Android TV is highly expected to run on Android’s new operating system (L) and will come with Google’s Play Store built-in. This should overall be quite a game-changer for the current status quo of both TV providers and set-top boxes alike. It is currently expected Android TV boxes will be available in the US within the next few months. This will presumably happen once L is released (and maybe in time for the Christmas market), but what about the rest of the world (Yes America, there are other countries too)?

Well the latest rumor is that France very well might be seeing Android TV soon. France Telecoms Company ‘Free’ have been in the market for their new evolution of set-top boxes and according to FrAndroid, Free seem extremely keen to make sure their new box is an Android one. In particular this Free/Android alliance might take the form of a paid-TV Android service. Unfortunately, at the moment details on this rumored deal are extremely limited and the current information was provided to FrAndroid based on the usual ‘unnamed sources’. As always with information like this, it is best to not read too much into it until further details or alternative sources start to confirm the details. You will of course be informed of any further details on this when (and if) they come in. So who out there is waiting for Android TV? Will this be a game-changer? Let us know what you think by leaving a comment.
