Lots of exciting stuff revolving around games happened at the Game Developers Conference held in San Francisco yesterday, including the 11th Annual International Mobile Gaming Awards. During this award ceremony, various mobile games were nominated to win an award for best game in certain categories. One of these categories was the Grand Prix, and the popular puzzle title Monument Valley takes home the award. It’s no small feat to be awarded the best game of the year, especially when many of the contestants were also some really great games. There were over 1,000 games submitted to this year’s awards which only makes the competition tougher, yet Monument Valley was able to steal the hearts of panel judges and win best game of the year.
Judges for the IMGA’s consist of journalists, gamers, and industry experts, making for a wide array of people from all sides of the industry to judge the games. All the games are given a fair assessment and then eventually filtered out and slimmed down to a total of 80 nominees, and from there the judges pick the best games for each different category including the Grand Prix. The other categories include honorable mention, people’s choice, excellence in gameplay, guilty pleasure, excellence in story telling, best meaningful play, best technical achievement in a game, best quickplay game, excellence in innovation, excellence in audio visual and art style, best multiplayer game, and best upcoming game. You can find the winners for each of those other categories at the source link.
Monument Valley for those who have never played it, is developed by a company called USTWO games. It’s a puzzle title that tasks people with manipulating large architectural structures to guide the character through each level to progress onto the next. It features a great minimalist design with 3D art inspired buildings and backdrops. What makes it somewhat unique is that the audio will react to and changes based on how you manipulate the structures, and the game features a cloud save function so you can pick up where you left off from different devices at any point in time.
