Gionee’s been ramping up its presence in the Indian market. Two ways through which the company is doing that is by announcing more phones, and by an extensive ad campaign during the cricket season. Earlier today, another one of the company’s budget phones went on sale in the country. The Gionee Pioneer P6 as it is known as, is now available for online purchase at a price of 8,890 INR or $144. The specifications of the device suggest it is an Android One competitor; and devices from the Android One scheme are available for about $30 lesser, so I don’t particularly understand why someone would go for this instead of the Android One choices.
Anyway, let’s talk specifications. The Gionee Pioneer P6 has a 5-inch FWVGA (854 x 480 pixel) display, and is powered by the same 1.3GHz quad-core processor — the MediaTek MT6582 — as the trio of Android One phones. It also has the same, i.e., 1GB of RAM, but offers 8GB of on-board storage. On the imaging side of things, the Pioneer P6 comes with a 5 megapixel rear shooter, and a front sensor which takes photos and video in 2 mega-pixel. The phone features the usual radio such as GPS and WiFi, besides 3G, and with an MRP (Maximum Retail Price) of 8,890 INR, the Pioneer P6 doesn’t make a very strong case.
A 1950mAh battery powers the device, which should hold good for one day’s usage. Also, the Pioneer P6 ships with only Android v4.4 KitKat on board, with no sign of Lollipop, while the Android One series will soon be updated to the latest iteration of Android. The phone was initially shown off back in November last year, but for reasons unknown it has taken a few months to show up on e-retailer stores. In fact, the device is still not available for purchase offline; FoneArena mentions that offline availability should commence soon.
