During CES 2015 this year, one of the new devices that was unveiled was the Remix tablet from Chinese company Jide. The Remix tablet hopes to achieve the same thing that Microsoft is trying to do with their Surface tablet devices – cobble together a device that can replace a laptop computer with something that brings the advantages of a tablet device. Unlike the Surface line of devices, Remix has decided to load their tablet with the Android operating system.
The Remix tablet is very similar to a Surface tablet visually, coming with an 11.6-inch screen, a trapezoid shape, a kickstand and a keyboard. Remix even made the keyboard attach magnetically like the Surface tablets. Other physical touches include volume controls that are similar to what Microsoft came up with, a headphone jack and a microUSB port.
Inside the Remix, Jide powers the tablet with an Nvidia Tegra 4 processor, 2 GB of RAM, and either 16 GB or 64 GB of internal storage space. The screen is a full 1080p HD resolution display. The Remix initially will ship with Android 4.4.2 KitKat with a custom Remix OS UI overlay. Remix CEO Jeremy Chou says the company plans to upgrade to an Android Lollipop distribution in April.
Chou indicated Remix decided to go with Android for their device to try to serve a market that they see as underserved. Chou, a former Google employee from the early 2000′s, sees most of Google’s efforts being directed to Chromebooks and their Chrome OS. This created an opportunity for users who wanted something Android-based that would help users on both the productivity and the play front.
The Remix tablet has started shipping in China, but a Kickstarter project is planned to commence in February to bring the device to the U.S. market. If it makes it here, Remix estimates the 64 GB model would sell for about $449 while the 16 GB model would list at $349.
