Android Headliner: How Can Motorola Out Do Themselves In 2015?

Motorola-AH-184

In 2014, Motorola silently had a pretty big year. Okay, maybe not that silently. But for most of the year, Motorola didn’t really announce anything or put out anything new. In the beginning of 2014 they put out the Moto E, a cheap (about $120) smartphone that’s actually pretty decent. They also announced the Moto 360, which everyone instantly fell in love with. And that was pretty much it until September.

September came along and Motorola had their event at their Headquarters in Chicago where they showed off the new Moto X and the Moto G 2014 models. They were both great phones, but that wasn’t all Motorola had up their sleeves for 2014. At that event, they also showed off the Moto Hint as well as their Power Pack Micro. Which really shows that they are into accessories as well now. And not ones that everyone has, which is nice as well. The Moto 360 sold very well, which was also made official and launched the next day at this event. We went home with the Moto G, Moto X and Moto 360, and I was smitten with them. Loved all three. In fact, I bought a Moto X and a Moto 360.

After this event in Chicago, rumors of the Nexus 6 being made by Motorola were heating up and coming fast and furious. Around mid-October, Google made it official, Motorola Nexus 6 with top of the line specs. Including a Snapdragon 805, 2560×1440 resolution display and 3GB of RAM. It’s an amazing device. But again that was not all of it. At the end of October, Motorola and Verizon announced the Droid Turbo. Which is essentially a Nexus 6 Mini. It’s such an amazing smartphone. With a huge 3900mAh battery and probably the best phone they’ve ever made.

So we have to ask, how does Motorola top 2014? What more can they do without becoming Samsung and releasing a ton of smartphones in 2015? I really don’t know. Although one thing they could do, which I know will never happen, is launching the Droid Turbo for all carriers. If they put that phone on every carrier here in the US, they’d sell a ton and pick up a huge chunk of market share. But because it’s a Verizon exclusive, that’s not going to happen, which is unfortunate. But if they put out a Moto X and a Moto X Mini in 2015, where they both have about the same specs, just different screen sizes (think Sony Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact), they’d outdo what they did in 2014. A lot of people loved the size of the Moto X, but also a lot of people think it’s way too small. And this way they’d capture a bigger market.

What do you think Motorola can do in 2015 to have an even bigger year than in 2014? Be sure to let us know in the comments below. Motorola and Lenovo are likely to read this, so let’s tell them!
