Sony’s SmartEyeglass gadget has leaked a couple of times in the last year or so, and yesterday those smartglasses got an official app in the Google Play Store. That usually means that the launch will follow soon, and we really didn’t have to wait for long, Sony unveiled company’s smartglasses and their availability, well, in a way at least. This is the developer edition of the smartglasses and they’re now available for pre-order in Germany and the U.K., and if you order them, they’ll ship your way in March. Keep in mind that these smartglasses are quite pricey though, in case you want to get your hands on a pair, you’ll have to splash out £520 ($840), which is quite the sum.
These smartglasses are, much like Google Glass, very expensive, but they’re somewhat different than Glass. Sony SmartEyeglass Developer Edition smartglasses (model SED-E1) actually feature full-frame transparent lens in front of both of your eyes, those lenses actually project augmented reality in front of you, the fill your field of vision with it. These smartglasses come with a wired controller which has a battery, microphone, speaker and some other stuff built-in, and lets you use these glasses. The product itself looks quite odd actually, but keep in mind these glasses are in a developer mode at the moment. SDK comes along with this device by the way.
You’ll need Android 4.4+ device in order to connect these glasses to it, and what seems really odd here is the battery life listed by Sony. The listing says: “Battery life: When not using the camera: approximately 150 minutes. When using the camera: approximately 80 minutes,” so this is definitely not meant to be a competitor to anything else out in the market at the moment. One would expect such product to last longer, but this seems interesting indeed, after all, we have to keep in mind that this is a developer product.
