2014 was definitely the breakthrough year for Xiaomi. This China-based company’s growth-rate is incredible, they managed to sell 61 million smartphones in 2014, after selling “only” 19 million a year before that. Take into consideration that this company was founded in 2010, and you’ll be even more amazed by these results. The company has no intention of stopping here, they’ll announce all sorts of expansions soon and the company intends to sell 100 smartphones this year. Anyhow, many sources have confirmed that Xiaomi is China’s number 1 smartphone manufacturer, and now a research firm IDC, is confirming that.

If you take a look below this article, you’ll notice two images. The first image is showing smartphone shipments in China by vendor, Q4 2014 vs Q3 2014 and Q4 2013. As you can see, Xiaomi is placed first in that table with a market share of 13.7% in the fourth quarter last year. The company managed to achieve year-on-year unit growth of 150% in Q4 2014. Xiaomi has edged out Apple, a second placed company here which held 12.3% of the market in Q4 2014. Huawei is a close third with 11%, and Lenovo and Samsung are fourth and fifth-placed companies here.

The second image down below show China’s smartphone shipments by vendor, 2014 vs 2013. Xiaomi is a first-placed company here as well, they held 12.5% market share in 2014, and only 5.3% a year before. Looking at year-on-year unit growth, Xiaomi grew 186.5%. Samsung is second place here, they held 12.1% market share in 2014, and are followed by Lenovo, Huawei and Coolpad, which held 11.2%, 9.8% and 9.4% respectively.

Chinese market is the biggest smartphone market in the world and the competition is fierce over there. China is home to many smartphone manufacturers and it’s always interesting to see some numbers layed out for us. Xiaomi intends to increase their market share in China this year even further, along with expanding to other areas of course. The company will announce their plans this month and we’ll see what exactly are they planning to do, but it is very probable that India and Brazil will be their first destinations, at least according to many reports that have been coming our way in the last couple of months. Either way, we’ll know everything rather soon.
