While Android Wear devices may not have been the first smartwatches, no one can argue that they did bring some great additions to the market with the way they handle notifications. Now, Pebble smartwatch users can get that same set of notification actions(plus more according to the Pebble team)on their Pebble smartwatches thanks to the latest update to the Pebble app, which brings it forward to version 2.3. Now after this update, you’ll be able to reply and act on notifications right from your Pebble on your wrist, just like with Android wear, and there are also some features you’ll be able to utilize that Android Wear currently doesn’t have.
Two of the focused new interactions that can be handled via your Pebble smartwatch are replying to hangouts messages with emojis, as well as “making it rain!” according to the devs, or otherwise known as sending some money to friends who have sent you a request via Square Cash. When it comes to the Android Wear Pebble compatibility, the basic idea is that if it’s something you can do with an Android Wear device, it will be capable of being completed via your Pebble too after the update to 2.3. A great thing for the developer side of things, is that making these sorts of interactions possible through Pebble requires no extra work. So if you want Android Wear action handling of notifications to work on Pebble devices, you don’t have to do a thing since this is handled by the Pebble app itself, taking the already baked in Android Wear action integration of apps and using that for the same functions within Pebble smartwatches.
If you’re a Pebble user and you want to test drive these features, you have to be a beta tester to do so. The good news is that the team at Pebble has opened up access to the beta and you can join by hitting this link, which takes you to the beta testing group (Google groups) page. Pebble mentions that while their team was able to make this happen for Pebblers, it’s all thanks to the “open approach Google built into Android’s notification system.” In addition to adding Android Wear notification handling to Pebble smartwatches, the latest update to the Pebble app also now allows Android users on Android 4.0+ compatibility with the Pebble platform, instead of the previous requirement of Android 4.3+.
