Google Maps 9.2 gets Torn Down, Shows Casting and Tango Functionality

Google-Maps-AH-1

As they always do, Android Police has torn down the latest version of Google Maps which is version 9.2. There’s a few goodies in this new version of Google Maps, including an image of an iceberg with Santa on it. Which is probably hidden on Google maps somewhere, since we are close to Christmas right now.

Additionally, Android Police also found support for casting Google maps with Chromecast. Which is pretty cool, but I’m not sure how often I’d use it. Maybe I’m alone here, but I can’t think of casting Google maps to the TV to often, unless you’re trying to show someone how to get somewhere, otherwise, I’m not sure how often people would use this functionality. For those wondering, the code looks like this:

<string name=”mr_system_route_name”>System</string>

<string name=”mr_user_route_category_name”>Devices</string>

<string name=”mr_media_route_button_content_description”>Cast</string>

<string name=”mr_media_route_chooser_title”>Connect to device</string>

<string name=”mr_media_route_chooser_searching”>Searching for devices…</string>

<string name=”mr_media_route_controller_disconnect”>Disconnect</string>

Finally, it looks like Google is adding Tango support into Google Maps. There’s not much going on here but there is a file named TangoCameraView.java, which leads us to believe that Project Tango is going to work with Google Maps at some point in the near future. There’s not much here in terms of code, but it’s still interesting to see Tango in Google Maps. It’ll be really interesting to see how it works out.

That looks to be about it for Google Maps v9.2. We should be seeing more updates this week for all of Google’s apps, as most of Google’s employees are gone next week until the new year. So we typically see a lot of app updates this week. So stay tuned for that. If you notice anything else new in the Google Maps update, be sure to let us know in the comments down below.
