When it comes AOSP development for their handsets, Sony has been much better about the whole thing lately. Although what we really want for our Sony devices is the official OTA update to Android 5.0 Lollipop, a nice consolation prize is that Sony has been adding in AOSP support this year for the lineup of Qualcomm based devices from their 2014 lineup. They have added in support for a couple more handsets today, which brings Sony’s AOSP support to the entirety of the Qualcomm CPU based lineup of Xperia device that have been released this year. AOSP support may not matter to some, but it’s big news for developers and ROM creators, as well as those users who own an Xperia device and are looking forward to some ROM support for them.
In today’s additions, Sony has brought AOSP support to the Xperia E3 and the Xperia T3 devices, and they have also updated the source code for the Xperia T2 Ultra and the Xperia M2 devices to make the code more stable. This only adds to Sony’s commitment to open development on their handsets, and hopefully for those users of the devices listed here and the others included in the same group, developers will be quick to get to work and start creating some amazing custom ROM’s. Things like that of course take time especially if we expect those creations to be quality made and deliver an awesome experience. So even though Sony has added AOSP support for those devices as of today, it could still be a while before we see any ROM’s hit for phones like the Xperia E3 and Xperia T3, and that’s OK.
On another note, Sony had earlier this fall shown that they were beta testing Android 5.0 Lollipop on a couple of devices including the Sony Xperia Z3, and the Xperia Z3 Compact, so with any luck it won’t be too long after the first of the year before we start to see some software updates head our way for those two phones.
