Qualcomm Begins Testing On LTE CAT 9 Carrier Aggregation With The Snapdragon 810 Chip

By now one of the biggest electronics shows is merely around a week away. We’re talking about CES 2015 which starts in the beginning of January. With the show coming up fast there are likely many new devices and gadgets we can’t wait, or hope to see, and some of those devices may just be powered by the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 CPU that should start hitting devices at retail next year. Speaking of the Snapdragon 810, Qualcomm has began testing LTE CAT 9 carrier aggregation using that chipset with help from British carrier EE and Chinese phone manufacturer Huawei.

During their testing, Qualcomm, Huawei, and EE were able to complete 3-carrier downlink and reach download speeds of up to 410Mbps. Qualcomm says the Snapdragon 810 chip contains the LTE-Advanced next-generation modem which helped to achieve these stats, but it wasn’t all resting on the the technology within Qualcomm’s new chip. The test results were also helped along with Huawei’s commercial infrastructure and EE’s LTE-A ‘4G+’ network. Qualcomm is aiming to be a continued leader in bringing faster download speeds and faster app operation to its customers and to users of devices that are powered by its chips. Qualcomm states that switching from LTE CAT-6 to LTE CAT-9 will make peak download speeds 1.5x faster and significantly improve the response times for app performance, and as carrier network technology moves forward Qualcomm is laying the groundwork to provide compatible technology to device manufacturers before other companies, although Samsung is said to be at work in development of the Exynos 6 processor rumored to support CAT 10.

While we might not see any smartphones or tablets that sport the Snapdragon 810 for another few months at least, perhaps we’ll get to see some devices shown off at CES that are running them so we can get a real-world picture of this CPU in action. There are no confirmed devices as of yet that will be carrying this chip technology from Qualcomm inside although there have been rumors or speculation that we might see the Snapdragon 810 inside of the next Galaxy Note flagship device. That likely wouldn’t get released until sometime next Fall though, so hopefully we’ll see some new devices carrying the 810 hit the market well before then.
