Google Maps are number one, no doubt about it, but there are other great offerings out there which offer features Google Maps do not. Nokia HERE maps are definitely such a product. You can use Nokia HERE maps offline if you want, all you have to do is download what you need (no matter how big) to your device and you’re ready to go, which you can’t exactly say for Google Maps. Google’s offering does let you download certain parts of a map, though you can cap that out real soon, I was able to cache only a part of my city for example. This is a big minus for people who travel often and can’t use the internet all the time while doing so (for one reason or another). I found myself travelling quite recently and had to rely on some other mapping / navigation solutions because of that. That being said, I’m really glad Nokia HERE maps are landing on Android.
Back in August, it was reported that Nokia HERE Maps will come exclusively to Samsung Galaxy devices and the Gear S smartwatch, at least officially. The other day however an APK leaked which worked on my Nexus 5 without a problem, same goes for some other devices my colleagues have tried it on, as well as numerous consumers who have sideloaded it. The app is now available officially at Samsung’s Galaxy app store, for those of you who want to try it out. Offline maps, turn-by-turn navigation and transit features are currently only available to Galaxy device owners, hopefully Nokia will extend the availability to all Android devices in the coming time though. We don’t have the information if this is a timed exclusive or not, but I believe it is. It wouldn’t make any sense for the company to keep HERE Maps available only on Samsung’s Galaxy devices.
In order to run Nokia HERE Maps you need to have a Samsung Galaxy smartphone running Android 4.1+ and at least 1GB of RAM.
