Android Wear devices are getting a new update starting today, and it brings along a few new things that users of the three currently available devices should appreciate. With that said of course, the updates have begun to roll out but that doesn’t mean that all users will get the software refresh today. It could take a couple of days before it reaches everyone as they are Over The Air. Google stated the update would be dropping this week, and here we are officially on the second day of the work week and the update has already begun, so once again Google lives up to its name and is making quick work of the updates.
The interesting thing though is that not only is the update starting to hit the LG G Watch and Samsung Gear Live owners, but it’s apparently hitting users who have already gotten their hands on a Moto 360 as well. The update brings the three Android Wear smartwatches to version 4.4.w.1, so if you’re seeing this alert pop up on your watch then you’re on the right track. We’ll gloss over the changes that come along with this software upgrade for those that are interested in knowing ahead of placing it on their devices. It should be noted that since the watches stay connected via the data through your device, one of the changes that comes with this update to Wear which is navigation related also requires the latest version of the Google Maps Android app. Make sure that’s updated on your device, we’d recommend it as the first thing you do but that’s just what we’d do personally.
The navigation change brings alternate destination points when looking for directions to a designated location on from your watch, like your favorite local coffee chain, so if there’s more than one in your area you should see the closest location to your proximity along with other destinations. How you get there should also now be a choice given,(Bicycling, Driving, Walking, or Transit)just like it is in the Maps Android app. There’s also a change to the function of setting an alarm. When users initiate a voice alarm by way of the OK Google command, they will now have the ability to select if the alarm needs to reoccur on repeat days. Are you getting the update already? Even though these changes are somewhat small, they can feel hugely useful, do you find them to be a big improvement?
