Dell’s new tablet is world’s thinnest, but that’s not its coolest feature

At the Intel Developer Forum yesterday, Intel and Dell announced an intriguing new tablet that combines a super slim design, powerful specs, and a 3D camera capable of some cool tricks.

As you might’ve guessed already, the Dell Venue 8 7000 packs some key Intel components, including a new Moorefield processor and a RealSense camera that is able to measure the depth of a scene and use the information for various applications.

To give you the basics first, the Venue 8 7000 features a beautiful Quad HD (2560 x 1600) AMOLED display of 8.4-inch, a quad-core Moorefield chip that’s presumably clocked between 1.6 and 2 GHz, 16GB of storage, and a microSD card slot.

Dell CEO Michael Dell claimed that the Venue 8 7000 is the thinnest tablet in the world, and at just 6 millimeters (less than a quarter of an inch), only Sony’s new Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact comes even close.

Besides its amazing thinness, what’s striking about the design of the Venue 8 7000 is the asymmetrical build – there’s a wide black band on one side of the device, that houses the cameras and a large speaker. The feature could be nice for holding the tablet without hiding the screen, but you will probably need a while to adjust to this unusual design.

What’s truly interesting about Dell’s new tablet is the RealSense camera, which takes the form of a stripe on the back of the device. Here’s how Intel describes the technology:

Featuring full 1080p color and a best-in-class depth sensor, the camera gives PCs and tablets 3D vision for new, immersive experiences. Essentially, RealSense is a 3D mapping technology in the vein of Microsoft Kinect and Google’s Project Tango. Intel said the tech will come to multiple Ultrabooks, PCs, and tablets this year, and the Venue 8 7000 is one of the first.

For now, not all details are available on this interesting new tablet from Dell. We figure that the RealSense integration can’t come cheap, but Dell hasn’t yet revealed any pricing information. What we do know is that you may be able to put the Dell Venue 8 7000 under the Christmas tree this year, as the device is set to become available in November.
