Nova Launcher gets new animations and search feature in latest update

Nova Launcher, probably the most popular custom launcher out there, received a nice little update bringing new animations and the ability to search faster through the apps on your system.

One of the main reasons Nova is so popular is the depth and breadth of the customization options it offers. The stock Android launcher looks basic compared to Nova, which lets you tweak and change almost every aspect of the homescreen and app launcher experience.

A new customization feature coming in version 3.1 (which was available to beta users from last week) is the ability to select the transition animation for switching to the app drawer and back to the homescreen. You get to choose between four neat little effects for now – Zoom, Fade, Circle and Slide Up. Of these, Circle resembles a bit the ripple effect that Google is pushing with Material design, but developer TeslaCoil warns that this transition may not work on all devices. To activate the new transitions, go to Nova Settings > Drawer > Transition Animation and pick your favorite.

Another new feature is the ability to quickly search through your apps, either from a button you can place at the top of the app drawer interface or from a shortcut icon that you can place on the desktop.

There’s also the customary bug fixes and performance tweaks. The update is now available to all users through the Play Store.
