Back in June, HP officially announced their first laptop running on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. Many of us thought that Google would shut this down, but so far they haven’t and even Archos has announced their own laptop running on Android. Now the HP Slatebook 14 has been made available for shipping from HP’s website. It’ll cost you about $430, which you could arguably do better with the HP Chromebook 14.
The HP Slatebook 14 features a 14-inch 1920×1080 resolution display, 2GB of RAM, and a hefty battery that can provide around 9 hours of battery life. There’s also a NVIDIA Tegra 4 CPU inside. Along with 16GB of RAM 3 USB ports (1 USB 3.0 and 2 USB 2.0 ports), HDMI port, SD card reader, 3.5mm headphone jack/microphone, along with four speakers, and Beats Audio. It weighs in at about 3.71 pounds, which for a 14-inch laptop, that’s not bad at all. It is available in black/yellow but no other colors just yet. It’s also not customizable like many other HP computers on their site, unfortunately.
This is a Google certified device, so you’ll have Android apps and games running on the HP Slatebook 14 in no time. But seeing as Google can’t get tablets right, with Android, I don’t think there’s much hope for 14-inch laptops, at least not yet. Although I’d love to be wrong. Lately, Google has been pushing Android to more than just smartphones and tablets, as we saw at Google I/O it’ll be on our wrists, in our cars and in our living rooms. And probably many other places.
Additionally, Former Googler, Jean-Baptiste QuĂ©ru recently talked about the HP Slatebook 14. He said the performance was quite good, but there are some issues with rendering fonts and web browsing. So obviously there is room for improvement here. And it’ll be interesting to see if we do see a second generation of this product.
