Facebook Messenger Crosses The 500 Million Downloads Threshold

Facebook-Messenger-AH-1

Facebook is the most popular social network in the world, hundreds of millions of people are a part of it. Facebook really is one of those companies people just like to hate on, even though most of those people use it on a daily basis. It’s not a secret that Facebook’s Messenger app is one of the leading chat services on Android, well, the app has hit a huge milestone, it has been downloaded over 500 million times and thus became the third non-Google app which managed to achieve that. Wonder which are the other two? Facebook and Whatsapp, both are a property of Facebook.

This is certainly a big milestone for the company. There’s a reason behind this though, Facebook Messenger’s downloads got a huge boost lately considering Facebook started forcing people to download the Messenger app if they want to use Facebook’s chat function. This move by Facebook sure did annoy a whole lot of people, including some of my friends who simply did not want to download the thing. Reactions on the internet were off the hook, I really did stumble upon some… interesting reactions, to say the least. Most people had both apps installed to begin with, so it didn’t really affect them that much. Either way, Facebook Messenger now joined the likes of Facebook, Whatsapp and a slew of Google apps to cross that magical 500 million line.

As a side note, there is a way for you to avoid downloading the Messenger app, well, sort of. This isn’t exactly a way to avoid doing it and still be able to use the chat function within the Facebook app, it’s more of a workaround and you probably thought of it already. You can simply use Facebook’s mobile site on your smartphone instead of downloading a separate Messenger app, though it’s not the same of course. In case you don’t use the service all that much and need to send a message or two every once in a while this option will do just fine.

Did you expect Messenger to hit 500 million downloads so soon after Facebook started pushing people towards it and do you use the app yourself?
