Rumor: this could be the second generation of the Moto G

moto e vs moto g (14 of 19)

The launch of the Moto G sent shockwaves throughout the industry back in November 2013, and now it seems that Motorola is preparing to up the ante with the second generation of the device.

We can’t really vouch for the two “exclusive” sources of this report, so we’re going to treat it as a total rumor for now, though one of them, the Brazilian website Tecnoblog, had at least one solid scoop back in April, when it leaked details about the Moto E.

Tecnoblog reports that Motorola is gearing up to add a new device to its lineup, one that would sit between the Moto G and the Moto X in terms of specifications. The source of the report is said to be a person close to a Brazilian carrier, who in the past has supplied good information on the Moto E. Just like the Moto G and the Moto E, this new device will impress with its quality for the price, says the report.

The Brazilian equivalent of the FCC has recently certified three variants of the device, under the XT1063, XT1068, and XT1069 code numbers. The XT1063 is a single-SIM model, the XT1068 is dual-SIM, while the XT1069 adds support for digital TV. The device could hit the market as the Moto M, according to the report.

Moving on to the second source, Spain-based website Mallando no Android produced the above image, that supposedly shows the Motorola XT1068. The site claims the XT1068 isn’t a new device, and it’s actually the second generation of the Moto G.

Looking at the picture, the most distinctive elements are the large speaker/earpiece grills at the top and bottom. The two grills are similar to those on the Moto E, but they are of the same size.

Mallando no Android shares a few of this “second generation Moto G’s” specs, though most of them are the same with the Moto G’s:

  • Quad-core ARM v7 processor with Adreno 305 GPU (likely Snapdragon 400)

  • 1280 x 720 pixels (HD) screen with a density of 320 ppi

  • 8MP rear camera

  • Dual-SIM

If this report is accurate, the second generation Moto G could bring just a minor upgrade in terms of specs – the screen specs suggest a 4.6-inch display (4.5-inch on the Moto G), and the 8MP would be a small, but welcome bump up from 5MP.

Again, a caveat – we don’t know for sure what we’re looking at here. While this may truly be the successor to the Moto G, there’s a chance it’s a prototype, local variant, or a different device entirely (perhaps the Moto M).

Getting back to more solid ground, we know that Motorola is planning to launch the Moto X+1 this August, along the Moto 360 smartwatch. It remains to be seen if there’ll be anything else on the menu.
