T-Mobile goes nuts at today’s Uncarrier 5.0 and 6.0 event

T-Mobile had more than one surprise for us this evening at their Uncarrier event in Seattle, WA. The revolutionary network says they will not stop fixing the industry’s problems and have taken their competition to a whole new level… again.

Magenta has gone ahead and announced Uncarrier 5.0, but they also threw a curve ball at us by announcing Uncarrier 6.0. They stunned the audience and the whole industry, but let’s stop hyping this up and get to the juicy details.

Uncarrier 5.0 – T-Mobile Test Drive

Purchasing a new smartphone and signing up for a new carrier can be one of the most stressful processes, probably up there with taxes. You never know how great the network is, or if your phone is good or not, or if your house gets good reception. Many end up regretting their decision after hours spent at the carrier store, but the return process is equally pesky.

T-Mobile wants to make it simpler to test their network. They have introduced T-Mobile Test Drive, in which they allow you to “cheat on your carrier” for 7 days. John Legere is calling it a “7-night stand”. All for free!

The steps are actually quite simple. Those interested can go to the Test Drive website and get started as soon as Monday comes around. They will take your information and credit card details, but won’t charge a penny. It’s just to make sure you don’t keep the phone, really.

They will ship you an iPhone 5S, as they have partnered with Apple. The unit will come with free service, so you can have a ball! Just make sure you return it to a T-Mobile store in time. You can then see if T-Mobile’s network is to your liking, and later decide if you are ready to jump ship.

Uncarrier 6.0 – Set Your Music Free

What is the biggest worry when streaming music? Unless we are within a WiFi network, streaming music can become a constant fear. Having limited data is stressful. In fact, it may even be worrisome if you do have an unlimited T-Mobile data plan, which can be throttled if you use over a certain amount of GBs.

In a surprise announcement this evening, T-Mobile decided to show us what Uncarrier 6.0 was all about. The carrier will “set your music free” by not counting your music streaming data against your data pool, if you are in a Simple Choice plan.

This will only work with the most popular music streaming apps, but more will be added in due time. Supported apps now include Rhapsody, Spotify, Pandora, iHeartRadio, iTunes Radio, Slacker, Samsung Milk and Beatport. This deal is made further impressive by the fact that even those who are being throttled will be able to stream music at full speed!

Rhapsody UnRadio

If those announcements weren’t enough, T-Mobile is also surprising us with quite an interesting launch. They have teamed up with Rhapsody to release Rhapsoy UnRadio. Of course, streaming data will also be free with this app, and Simple Choice subscribers can use the service at no extra cost.

Other T-Mobile customers will be able to pay $4 a month for T-Mobile’s Rhapsody twist. The app comes with no limitations, as it is adless, offers unlimited skips and gives you the ability to choose your music. You can sign up for this app on June 23rd.

Wow, T-mobile! You have really outdone yourself this time.
