Amazon’s Firefly Feature Scans Virtually Anything So You Can Buy It On Amazon

Now that the announcement and specs for the Amazon Fire Phone are out of the way, it’s time to get into some of the features. Namely here we’ll be focusing on the feature they have added in called Firefly. We reported on a the Fire Phone a couple days ago about how it would be all about allowing customers easier access to buy things from Amazon. We stated that Amazon’s main goal was not to take over the smartphone market and become the Next Big Thing when it comes to hardware. Yes, the Amazon Fire Phone will probably sell well, but selling a huge number of devices isn’t Amazon’s endgame. Their main goal is to continue selling us large numbers of goods that they carry on Amazon. That’s where they’ll make their money. It’s a smart move and it wasn’t hard to predict since they’ve been doing this with all their other hardware already.

So how does the Firefly feature play into all of this? Well that’s the amazing thing about it, it basically allows you to buy all sorts of goods through Amazon just by scanning them. It seems like it can do it really rather seamlessly as too. Firefly, will scan both audio(music and video) and physical goods that at a moments notice, so that should you be interested in purchasing it, Firefly will send you straight to Amazon to pick it up. Like that song that just played on the radio and want to grab it for your library? Great, just scan the songs audio before it’s over with Firefly and you’ll be taken to Amazon to pick it up. See a book that you like and might enjoy reading and want to add to your “actual” library? No problem there either,once again just scan the book with Firefly and you’ll be taken to Amazon to purchase it.

Wondering how all this magic goes down? It’s pretty simple really. The Firefly app works a lot like Shopsavvy or Barcode scanner apps that you can pick up on the Play Store on other Android devices. You just open Firefly and it will use the phones camera to snap an image of a QR code, a DVD, a Book, regular bar codes and much more and the app can process the image and find it for you in the Amazon store. Amazon didn’t want to leave the audio part out of this equation, so they partnered the scanning portion of the app with an audio analyzer similar to what we’d find in Google’s sound search widget, which scans music and video audio to take you to those goods on Amazon as well. It all sounds pretty neat, and allows the phone to do just what we thought it would, which is give customers an easier outlet to Amazon purchases.
