The day is finally here, the day we get to see the unveiling and official announcement of the fabled Amazon smartphone. The event is being held live this morning in Seattle,WA, June 18th and there is plenty to get into about this new device. The most notable thing to consider is that the smartphone from Amazon houses three dimensional technology by the likes of which we’ve never seen before according to the people that tested the device in Amazon’s teaser video, but.. we’re all here for the specs right? Right. So here’s what we all have to look forward to with the device.
First off, it’s a 4.7-inch LCD IPS HD display protected by Gorilla Glass 3, and a rubberized frame with injection molded steel connectors. According to Amazon’s CEO Jeff Bezos, this ensures a tight and precise fit and beautiful trim rings, as the Fire Phone was designed with one handed use in mind. The screen is also toted as having an industry leading ultra-bright display with 590 nits, providing dynamic contrast and a circular polarizer. The screen is just the tip of the iceberg though. The Amazon Fire Phone(we all knew it couldn’t be called anything else)is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor clocked at 2.2GHz, with an Adreno 330 GPU for all the graphics processing needs and 2GB of RAM. So when it comes to power and performance, the Fire phone isn’t skimping on anything. It isn’t leading the pack, but it certainly isn’t bringing up the rear either.
When it comes to the camera, the Fire phone is working with a 13MP rear facing camera sensor with f/2.0 aperture five element lens, and has optical image stabilization, so we should be looking at a pretty decent photo capability and there’s a dedicated camera button to launch the camera app for fast and easy picture taking. The Fire phone also carries dual stereo speakers powered by Dolby Digital for stereo audio in landscape and virtual surround sound. Will it put out better audio than the HTC M8 with BoomSound? Time will tell. When it comes to photo storage on the Amazon Fire Phone, images are stored directly in the Amazon Cloud and users will have unlimited storage for photos, which may or may not turn some people off, but it will if anything ensure that everything is neatly and safely backed up. As for actual onboard storage, so far there hasn’t been any mention of it so we can presume that storage sits around 8GB at least.
