Back in mid-January, we brought you news that UK retailer, Argos, appeared to have inadvertently leaked details about a revised, improved version of Motorola’s budget Moto E smartphone equipped with 4G LTE. Since then, we’ve seen a number of leaks regarding the improved Moto E and the current rumor is that tomorrow, Motorola will make the LTE-equipped Moto E official as their “exciting announcement.” The image above, taken from the source, shows a Verizon 4G-branded Moto E device.
We’ve seen a number of different leaked specification changes in addition to the addition of 4G LTE. These include the original 4.3-inch, 540 by 960 pixel screen being replaced with a 4.5-inch panel of the same resolution. Another rumor has the original dual-core Snapdragon 200 chipset replaced with a quad core unit. We’ve also seen reports that the new Moto E LTE will include a front-facing camera and double the internal storage, so that means 8 GB rather than 4 GB. The final rumored improvement is a boosting of the device’s in-call behaviour with a secondary noise-cancelling microphone being installed. Some of these rumors make more sense than others but of course and all could be true! It might depend on Motorola’s plans for the existing 3G-only Moto E, but replacing the whole device with a larger unit makes some sense, especially as the dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 processor does not support 4G LTE out of the box. We may be seeing a higher family of Qualcomm processor included that supports LTE (and of course, has four cores rather than two). The new Moto E LTE might even include a 64-bit Qualcomm processor.
The original Moto E is one of the devices that showed the world that a low end handset does not have to equate to a poor user experience. It’s great to see the devices improved too; it appears that the second generation Moto E will receive a more significant specification bump compared to the original and second generation Moto G. If you’re in the market for a lower end device, would you consider holding out for the Moto E LTE for the rumored improvements all around? Let us know in the comments below.
