It looks like LG and Apple have signed a multibillion deal with Samsung, at least according to the latest report. Anyhow, let’s see what’s what. According to a report by Korea Times, LG and Apple have signed an agreement with Samsung in order to get the next-gen RAM modules from this Korean tech giant, which they’ll implement in their upcoming flagship. The report doesn’t give out many details regarding which RAM we’re talking about here, but I guess it’s safe to assume we’re talking about the recently-announced next-gen DDR4 RAM modules. Samsung also recently announced the “stackable” 3GB RAM / 32GB storage modules, but the DDR4 RAM module seems more probable here.
“Under the agreement, Samsung will start providing LG Electronics with 100 percent mobile DRAM chips it needs for LG G4 smartphone, which will be unveiled in April. Also, Samsung will handle at least half of the amount that Apple needs for its new iPhone ― tentatively named iPhone 6S,” said one of the industry sources. Samsung’s new DDR4 RAM module offers twice the density and the I/O performance compared to previous RAM modules. As a side note, this module is actually built with a 20nm production method. So, according to this new deal, Samsung will not only be Apple’s major SoC supplier, but will also supply their RAM modules to the Cupertino giant. These two companies have been suing each other back and forth, and have finally decided to call truce last year.
These new RAM modules Samsung manufactured are definitely a step above what we’ve seen thus far. LG has already released one handset which has DDR4 RAM on the inside, the LG G Flex 2, so it’s safe to assume that the LG G4 will also sport the same module one the inside. As far as Apple goes, we’ll probably see these new modules implemented in the iPhone 6S / 7, if Apple doesn’t decide to take advantage of the modules earlier than that, of course. Are you excited for the upcoming smartphone which will sport these RAM modules like the LG G4? Speaking of which, what device are you looking forward the most this year?
