Samsung’s Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge handsets will definitely be the company’s most sought-after announcements at MWC next month, many people are eagerly awaiting for the company to launch their next flagship. Though it seems like Samsung has plenty more to show us at one of the biggest tech shows of the year. According to the latest report, Samsung will, in collaboration with SK Telecom (South Korean carrier), demonstrate the 5G wireless technology with data transmission speeds of up to 7.55Gbps.
I don’t know if you recall this, but the two companies have agreed to collaborate in the Research and Development department last October. They agreed to work together on R&D of 5G wireless technology in specific, and it seems like they’re ready to demonstrate this tech during MWC. This new technology will take advantage of millimeter wave frequencies, which are considered to be over 60GHz, this is much higher than what we get in the current mobile phone and Wi-Fi frequencies. This tech is far from perfect though, and Samsung and SK Telecom have been working on improving that. It has a lot of weak points, like poor propagation, and it’s easily affected by walls for example, they can easily mess with your signal.
According to the report, Samsung and SK Telecom are using the “3D beamforming” in order to counter the side-effects. This is a technique which basically tries to sense the location of the device, and then directs the signal beam towards that device. Think of it as a straight signal right to the wanted object, rather than a wide area where the signal is available. These two companies actually plan to launch the world’s first commercial 5G network in South Korea by 2020. It will be interesting to see if the two companies managed to make some progress when 5G is concerned. MWC will be filled with interesting tech, and wireless transmission technology will definitely be worthy of checking out as well. Let’s see what Samsung and SK Telecom have to show us, stay tuned.
