According to a new report out of Focus Taiwan, Acer is slated to be announcing a couple of new smartphones at MWC 2015 next week. One is going to be based on Windows 10. Which will be interesting considering Microsoft won’t have Windows 10 out until the summer. The other is going to be running Android and will be in their Jade lineup.
Back in December, Acer announced the Liquid Jade S, which was a nice looking smartphone from Acer, but as usual, it wasn’t a high-end device. Acer typically comes to shows like MWC and doesn’t announce any real high-end smartphones, the are more the mid-range and low-end type. For example, the Liquid Jade S features a 5-inch 720p display along with a MediaTek processor, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. So it’s not completely terrible, but it’s not amazing like the Galaxy S6 or anything. Which is about what we are expecting out of this new Jade series smartphone at Mobile World Congress next week.
Additionally, Acer is expected to release a new wearable, well really their first wearable. Now we don’t know what it is, it could be a watch. It could be a fitness tracker, it could be anything. Thanks to the very broad meaning of “Wearable”. I’m definitely hoping it’s an Android Wear smartwatch from Acer. You can never have too many choices when it comes to smartwatches, and I think it’s been proven that Android Wear is much more functional than many of these proprietary OS’ out there.
Acer is more known for their desktops and laptops, and Chromebooks. But they do have a mobile division, and have been releasing tablets for some time, as well as smartphones. However their smartphones don’t generally make it across to the US. Maybe this time will be different. Either way, we’ll be checking them out next week in Barcelona, so make sure you stay tuned!
