Samsung’s Budget Galaxy Tab 3 Lite SM-T113 Is Official

Samsung’s new flagship S6 and S6 Edge were revealed earlier in the week and following recent comparison benchmarks, appear to be at the very top of the Android device tree. The news today concerns a device that sits at the other end of the pecking order as Samsung Netherlands have officially unveiled a new, entry level 7-inch tablet, the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite with a model designation of SM-T113. The tablet is already available in Hungary for the equivalent of $125 or €115 in two colors, black and white. The tablet is based around Android 4.4 KitKat and Samsung’s TouchWiz interface, which runs on a 1.3 GHz processor that appears to be a quad core unit from an undisclosed manufacturer. I write appears, because some of Samsung’s promotional material points towards a 1.2 GHz dual core processor. There’s 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of internal storage, which may be boosted by another 32 GB thanks to a MicroSD card. The screen is a 1,024 by 600 pixel TFT panel and the tablet is WiFi only, which understandable given the low price, and benefits from 802.11 b/g/n WiFi standards. There’s a 3,600mAh battery, a 2MP rear camera and a 0.3 VGA front facing camera.

Although an entry level tablet is perhaps nothing to be excited about, that Samsung are releasing a low-powered, inexpensive device is interesting in itself. Samsung have a habit of bringing out all sorts of different models at many points in the price and ability range, but have tended to shy away from the very inexpensive materials. The European budget tablet market is catered for by a range of smaller companies, such as Archos, with similar specifications but lower prices; $125 for a Samsung branded tablet is still a little expensive, but for customers with an existing Samsung smartphone there is a very shallow learning curve as the device will work in the same way as their handset. For some lightweight browsing, ebook reading or even gaming, the device will probably be okay as a first tablet product, although users may find the low screen resolution somewhat limiting.

What do you think of the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite? Could you see yourself using this device or perhaps buying one for a less technologically familiar loved one or friend? Could this be a competitor to the cheaper Amazon Kindle Fire tablets? Let us know in the comments below.
