Samsung is known for its Exynos line of chipsets as we saw with the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge . But now, a report indicates that the company could be willing to use chipsets from Taiwanese chip maker MediaTek, at least in its low end devices.
While neither company has come out and given official word on this, the General Manager of MediaTek, Zhu Shan-gzu has mentioned that the two companies are making small time progress in striking a deal together.
This puts a doubt on whether Samsung will continue using Qualcomm chipsets in the future. As we all know, the dispute between Qualcomm and Samsung about the Snapdragon 810 has been quite public, so it’s likely that the company is looking to switch SoC suppliers altogether.
Naturally, Samsung’s high margin flagship devices will still use the Exynos chipsets and this new move might only impact the company’s midrange devices. Given the slim profit margins on low end devices, it makes logical sense for Samsung to consider a cheaper alternative for Qualcomm chipsets.
A number of midrange devices from Samsung are currently using the Snapdragon chipsets, so if this report turns out to be true, Qualcomm could be heavily impacted as Samsung is one of its biggest clients.
