MediaTek Wants To Partner Up With Samsung According To The Company’s General Manager

AH Samsung and MediaTek_wm

As you all probably know by now, Samsung has decided not to use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 chip in the company’s new Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge flagships. Samsung has opted for their proprietary 14nm Exynos 7420 processor which beats everything in benchmarks and which is allegedly 30-35% more power efficient than anything available in the market. There were also some reports that Snapdragon 810 has overheating issues and what now, but that part was never actually proven.

That being said, it seems like Samsung intends to use MediaTek’s chips in some of their upcoming devices. It was reported recently that Samsung and MediaTek might partner up, and that Samsung might deploy MediaTek SoCs in some of the company’s devices. The two companies didn’t want to comment on any of this, at least not officially, but it seems like MediaTek’s General Manager couldn’t help himself. Zhu Shan-gzu, said that MediaTek is trying to partner up with Samsung, and that they’re making progress. MediaTek’s newly-announced processors are really impressive, and Samsung might take the bait soon. MediaTek has announced their Helio SoCs at this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, and their benchmarks scores are great, though it remains to be seen whether that translates into real life performance, of course.

On one hand, Samsung is making their own processors and MediaTek partnership might not make much sense, but on the other hand, MediaTek manufactures really cheap and capable SoCs and Samsung might use those in the lower-end of their smartphone lineup. It would be interesting to see if this Korean tech giant decides to partner up with MediaTek, and what will that mean for their partnership with Qualcomm. As a reminder, Samsung didn’t ditch Qualcomm altogether (just yet), the just decided not to release a Snapdragon version of the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge (at least not yet). What do you think? Will Samsung use MediaTek’s processors in the future? How about Snapdragon chips, will we see new Snapdragon-powered Samsung-branded devices this year? Let us know what you think in the comments, we’d love to hear from you.
