Samsung Announce Rich Accessory Collection For Galaxy S6 And S6 Edge

We’ve seen rumors that Samsung are to work on their own collection of accessories for the new Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge handsets, due to be released in April. Some of these accessories are said to include Samsung’s identity system, which will allow the device to recognize that it is wearing an official Samsung accessory and could be used to change the behaviour of the device. Today’s announcement is a little different; Samsung have announced the “rich accessory collection” for the two new Galaxy S6 models. These new accessories are designed to allow customers “the freedom to customize their mobile experiences to fit their personal style while enhancing the beautiful and purposeful design of Samsung’s newest devices.”

On those two new devices, the S6 and S6 Edge, these are different from previous Galaxy S flagship devices in three ways. The first is that the devices are built from metal rather than plastic, so they should feel as premium and expensive as their price tags might imply. Second, neither device has a MicroSD card, instead Samsung is selling the device with a choice of 32 GB, 64 GB or 128 GB of internal memory. The S6 range use a new generation, high efficiency, high performance memory unit, which is many times faster than a MicroSD card slot but has the disadvantage that it’s impossible to swap out a memory card for another. The third difference is that the S6 and S6 Edge come with an internal, fixed 2,550 mAh battery, which is not considered to be user replaceable. This means that for the power user expecting to use all of the charge in the course of a day, he or she is going to need a battery pack (or a charger) to keep the Galaxy S6, whereas previous generation Samsung flagship devices had a replaceable battery.

The new premium accessories come from partners such as Burton, Swarovski, Montblanc, Rebecca Minkoff and Romero Britto. Younghee Lee, Samsung’s Executive Vice President of Global Marketing, said this on the matter: “Samsung has a long history of designer partnerships and an unparalleled understanding of how technology enhances fashion and how fashion inspires technology.” The new accessories will be available by the time the Galaxy S6 arrives in retail stores and includes a clear view cover, clear cover, S view cover, flip wallet, protective cover, wireless charger and external battery pack.
