There is a gross misconception that gamers are vastly unhealthy people. However, even ridiculously overblown stereotypes can be slightly derived from the smallest bit of truth. While Atari’s new fitness application, appropriately named ‘Atari Fit’ is not meant just for gamers and anyone can download it, it might appeal to those who like to play games a little bit more. Atari Fit aims to bring the same kind of fun and wonder that people might get from playing games to the realm of health and fitness. Users can engage in workouts on their own or work together with other players to earn points, unlock new fitness routines and actual Atari games to play all in the name of a healthier lifestyle.
Atari wouldn’t be the first company to develop a gamified fitness app, Zombies, Run! has been out on the Play Store for quite some time and fuses together the concept of a running application with the elements of a game where you must escape zombies, pick up supplies, and survive the night. With Atari Fit though there is a whole different style of “play” for those who choose to engage. There is no story to follow while you exercise, but you can complete exercises and level up, gain points, and unlock cool stuff just as you would within a game.
Atari Fit connects with various wearables so you can collect the data from your Android Wear device, Jawbone Up, Fitbit and more, and it’s compatible with Google Fit as well so you can collect and aggregate your data into Google Fit along with any other health and fitness apps you might use to do the same. Atari even added in multiplayer elements that let you play with other users from anywhere in the world, and leaderboards to help keep you motivated and staying competitive, always striving to do just a little better in hopes to raise your ranking. If you like to keep things varied, and with exercises you should, Atari Fit includes over 100 different exercises to switch things up, and of course what would a fitness app be without the ability to post your accomplishments to social feeds like Facebook and Twitter. Atari Fit is free of course, and it just might be the fitness app to convince those gamers who need a little more motivation to get up and start working out.
