IDC Results are in, Samsung and Apple still at the top, Others Gaining Ground

Smartphones-2014-AH-1

It’s the time of year where we see all of these companies put out their numbers for shipments from each of the phone manufacturers from the previous quarter. This time, it’s IDC’s turn. They released their numbers this morning (the press release is in the sources below). As expected, Samsung did lose some market share, but they still remained at the top, and #1 for Android manufacturers. Amazon saw a huge decrease, actually.

Apple saw 21.4 unit shipments in Q4 2014, vs 26.0 in the Q4 2013 timeframe. That’s a difference of -17.8%. Samsung saw 11.0 unit shipments this quarter, down from 13.5 in the Q4 2013. That’s a decrease of about -18.4%. The only one here that actually saw an increase was Lenovo, who jumped 9.1%. While ASUS and Amazon both saw decreases of 24.9% and 69.9% respectively. However, in the “Others” you’ll see that there was a 36.2% increase year over year. That section would cover HTC, Motorola, LG and others.

So even though Apple had a really big quarter to end the year, they still saw a pretty sizeable decrease in market share. Although that will probably bounce back in the Q1 2015 results. It’d be interesting to see the breakdown of the “others” category and see how they stack up, because we know that Motorola has definitely seen some change year over year and I’m sure LG saw even bigger changes.

From IDC’s press release:

“Despite an apparent slow-down of the market, we maintain our forecast about tablet growth in 2015,” said Jean Philippe Bouchard, Research Director, Tablets. “Microsoft’s new OS, a general shift towards larger screen form factor and productivity focused solutions, and technology innovations such as gesture interface that could be introduced in tablets will help the market maintain positive growth in 2015.”

So how many of you were shocked by the results here for the fourth quarter of 2014? Let us know your thoughts in the comments down below.
