Huawei Appeals For Recognition In The U.S., Xiaomi Plans International Expansion

Huawei and Xiaomi logo

Chinese smartphone market is huge, the competition over there is truly fierce. Xiaomi and Huawei are definitely one of the biggest smartphone names in China, both of these companies were amongst the top 5 smartphone OEMs in China in 2014, and Xiaomi even managed to sit on top of the pile. That being said, these two companies have been going back and forth over social networks, having their own, small and private war of words. Both of these companies have serious international appetite, Huawei is present in markets outside of Asia for quite some time now, but never really managed to get the attention they wanted. Xiaomi, on the other hand, plans on expanding outside of Asia this year and will announce their plans next month.

The founder of Huawei, Ren Zhengfei, actually traveled to the World Economic Forum in Davos (Switzerland) and gave a speech there. Amongst other things he mentioned, Huawei’s founder appealed to the U.S. to accept the products of his company. At the same time, Xiaomi has gathered their international crew in Beijing in order to discuss global expansion, as we’ve reported the other day when Xiaomi’s CEO posted a teaser image on his Weibo profile. Soon after that followed the confirmation that Xiaomi will announce their plans in February, as I already mentioned.

Xiaomi became really good at raising hype over its products, they got really good at it quite a short period of time considering this company was founded in 2010 and is by far less experienced than Huawei. Ren Zhengfei’s company, on the other hand, also makes great products, but they’re just not as good at marketing as Xiaomi is. Huawei’s senior VP, Yu Chendong, even criticized Xiaomi’s newest Mi Note handsets over social networks recently. He criticized poor battery life of Xiaomi’s products and stated that there are no important differences between the smartphone displays in Huawei’s and Xiaomi’s products, probably referring to the QuadHD display on the MiNote Pro. Unlike Huawei, Xiaomi uses a far lighter tone in their posts while responding to such critics, basically deflecting them.

Hugo Barra, Xiaomi’s VP of International, held a meeting with Donovan Sung, and several other members of Xiaomi’s international team in order to decide what will their next step be. They did not disclose the content of the meetings, of course, but we do expect them to share a teaser or two in the coming days. We’ll know everything in February, and I expect Xiaomi to announce plans for further expansion into India and Asia, along with some plans for Brazilian market.
