Android Lollipop is making its way to Nexus and GPE devices as we speak. We reported yesterday that certain Sony Xperia Z Ultra GPE users started getting the update recently even though Sony (nor Google) didn’t confirm the rollout then, well, the official confirmation has arrived. Android Lollipop is now rolling out to Sony’s Z Ultra behemoth, though keep in mind this is a Google Play Edition of the phone we’re talking about, if you own a regular Xperia Z Ultra with Sony’s skin on it, no Lollipop for you at the moment. Xperia Z Ultra GPE users will, of course, get the vanilla Lollipop experience on their devices. Android Lollipop brings a ton of improvements and a complete overhaul of the UI, so keep that in mind. It would take a long time to go through all of its features, but you’ll get a ton more animations as part of Google’s “Material Design” skeuomorphic approach. “Project Volta” is also here, this is what Google calls all the optimizations they made in order to reduce battery consumption of the OS and thus provide you with a better battery life overall. That’s just a small piece of what Google introduced, if you’d like to know more, visit our Android 5.0 Lollipop page.
The OTA update is about 379MB and you’ll need at least 500MB of free space on your phone, so keep that in mind. That being said, go ahead and check your Xperia Z Ultra GPE for updates if you haven’t already or just wait for the phone to notify you the update is available, although very few of tech-savvy people do that I believe. Xperia Z Ultra is Sony’s huge phablet, we’re talking about a monster device sporting a 6.4-inch 1080p (1920 x 1080) IPS LCD display along with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage which is expandable via MicroSD card up to 64GB. Xperia Z Ultra is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 quad-core chip clocked at 2.2GHz which comes with an Adreno 330 GPU for graphics processing. 8-megapixel rear-facing camera is also a part of this package and a 2-megapixel camera is located on the front side of this phablet. The device ships with a 3050mAh non-removable battery and, once again, it’s huge. Let us know if you got the update already, it might take some time until you receive it.
