You know Philips, right? Yeah, you do. They make a bunch of stuff, although in my mind when I think of Philips I tend to think of headphones for some reason. Not particularly because there are very good, but just because they seem to be on sale quite often. That said, back in the days of Techno and Britpop they used to make a number of phones. In fact, if you want a real blast from the past then Google ‘Philips TCD128’. That was a great phone back in 1999. Anyway, yes, Philips did make mobile phones and actually still do which might come as a surprise to most people in the US or Europe. Nowadays though, they are more often released in many emerging markets and it seems Philips are creating a bit of a name for themselves.

For those that follow the Philips resurgence, then you will know that they released a couple of smartphones back in August dubbed the Philips I928 and the Philips S388. Gotta love those names. When the two devices launched in India they were priced at Rs 38,538 ($626) and Rs 13,694 ($222) respectively. Well, that was then. A few months later and here we are seeing the release of the latest Philips smartphone. This one is actually a followup to the S388 and as such you probably are not too surprised to hear it is under the guise, the Philips S398. Another catchy name.

The Philips S398 has gone live on the official website in India and comes with a 5” IPS display with a 1280 x 720 resolution. Inside, the S398 is equipped with 1GB RAM and a Quad-core MediaTek MT6582M processor (clocking at 1.3GHz). In terms of memory, the S398 comes with 8GB internal storage as standard, along with a microSD card slot offering a further 32GB storage. In terms of cameras, there is an 8MP camera on the back and also a 2MP front-facing shooter on offer. Other notable features include 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, FM radio, a 2040 mAh battery and running on Android 4.4 (KitKat). If this sounds like something you might be interesting in, then at present there is no confirmation on how much the device will cost in India. That said, as a good guide price, the S398 is currently listed for 2990000 Vietnamese Dong which equates to roughly Rs. 8,850 ($140). So what do you think? Interested in the new Philips smartphone? Let us know.
