Samsung Galaxy S4 Might Receive Android Lollipop Early In 2015

14 - 1

Whilst we’ve already seen the Samsung Galaxy S5 allegedly running an early version of Android 5.0 Lollipop, until now the 2013 Galaxy flagship device, the Samsung Galaxy S4 has been largely ignored by the press. Two other two big name manufacturers, Motorola and HTC, have already confirmed that their 2013 flagship devices are in the queue to receive Android Lollipop but Samsung have remained quiet on the subject. We might have some good news on the subject because SamMobile have posted an article pointing towards a speedy update to the S4 early on the New Year. This will be the device’s third major update after receiving 4.3 Jelly Bean, then 4.4 Kit Kat having been released running Android 4.2. However, whilst I am confident that the S4 will receive Lollipop, I need to remind readers that my article today is not to confirm that Lollipop will be released early in the New Year. Also, “early 2015″ can mean anything from the 1 January to some time in May! And there’s no allowing the the time it may take for your carrier to approve and release the update.

Looking at the source, SamMobile have stated that the Exynos-powered GT-I9500 will receive the update first. This version of the device uses the Exynos 5 Octa processor, the 5410, which consists of two quad core processors, combining a high efficiency 1.2 GHz quad core processor with a high performance quad core 1.6 GHz unit. After the Exynos version has been released, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 versions are next, which consist of the I9505 and S4 Active. Both of these uses a 1.9 GHz version of the Snapdragon 600 quad core processor. To further confuse matters, there are two versions running the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, the S4 LTE-A and the S4 Active LTE-A, but we’ve no real insight into when these devices will receive their update.

The S4’s core specification is very much capable of running Android Lollipop and running well. All versions have 2 GB of RAM and a 5.0-inch, 1080p SuperAMOLED screen. There’s a 13 MP camera on the back (8 MP for the S4 Active), a plethora of radios including 4G LTE, high speed WiFi, NFC and an Infrared sensor. Battery capacity is 2,600 mAh. We hope that we won’t have a repeat of the Samsung Galaxy S III / Android Kit Kat fiasco, where Samsung decided not to update most versions of the S III to Android Kit Kat, blaming low memory (ignoring how Kit Kat is optimized to run on lesser devices); all the S4 devices have 2 GB of memory and a capable processor. It’s also been a hugely successful device for Samsung; no excuses if the update to Lollipop is not released! I’d expect the S5 to pick up the update first and the S4 to follow a short time later.
